The marketing tool stack for 2026–27: SEO, ads, analytics, email and social, without the sprawl
Marketing teams accumulate tools the way kitchens accumulate gadgets. Here is the stack we run client programmes on going into 2027 — one tool per job across search, paid media, measurement, email and social — with what the AI features in each are actually good for.

Every marketing audit we run starts with the same exercise: list every tool the team pays for, write the job it does next to it, and look at the blanks. There are always blanks. This is the stack we standardise client programmes on going into 2027, one tool per job, with a note on what the AI features in each category are genuinely good for and where they still need a person. Brands matter less than roles; swap any of these for the equivalent your team already knows.
Key takeaways
- Seven jobs cover most marketing programmes: search research and tracking, AI-answer visibility, paid media, measurement, email and lifecycle, social and creative, reporting.
- AI features are strongest at research, first drafts, variations and anomaly detection; weakest at strategy, claims and final copy.
- Measurement is the job to over-invest in: GA4 done properly, server-side tracking, and one reporting layer everyone trusts.
- Own the accounts. Every platform, pixel and list sits in your name, whoever runs it.
Search: research, tracking and now AI visibility
A keyword and backlink suite (Semrush, Ahrefs or similar) still anchors search work, alongside Google Search Console, which remains the only source of truth for what Google actually shows. The new job is AI-answer visibility: tracking whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI features cite you for the prompts your buyers use. Several tools now do this, and the suites are adding it; what matters is running a fixed set of prompts monthly and logging the sources cited. Method in our GEO and AI optimisation service.
Paid media: the platforms plus one layer of control
Google Ads and Meta Ads Manager are the platforms; the tool decision is what sits on top. We use the platforms’ own automation — Performance Max, Advantage+ — with tight guardrails, a shared creative library, and a spreadsheet or lightweight budget pacer that the platforms do not provide. Third-party bid managers rarely earn their fee below enterprise spend. Our guardrails are in keeping control of automated campaigns.
Measurement: the job to over-invest in
GA4, configured by someone who has read the documentation; Google Tag Manager with server-side tagging for the events that matter; a consent platform that does what your privacy counsel says; and Looker Studio or a similar layer for the reports people actually open. AI features here are useful for anomaly detection and plain-language summaries of what changed. They are not a substitute for a tracking plan. See analytics and CRO.
| Job | Tools we standardise on | AI is good for | Still needs a person |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search research and tracking | Semrush or Ahrefs, Search Console | Clustering, gap analysis, brief drafts | Choosing what to rank for and why |
| AI-answer visibility | Prompt tracking tool or suite add-on | Monthly citation logging | Deciding which pages to fix |
| Paid media | Google Ads, Meta Ads Manager, LinkedIn Campaign Manager | Creative variations, audience expansion | Budgets, exclusions, claims in ad copy |
| Measurement | GA4, Tag Manager (server-side), consent platform, Looker Studio | Anomaly alerts, summaries | The tracking plan and the definitions |
| Email and lifecycle | Klaviyo, HubSpot, Mailchimp or Brevo by fit | Subject line options, send-time optimisation | Flows, segmentation logic, consent |
| Social and creative | A scheduler, Figma, Canva, CapCut or Premiere | Variations, captions, resizing | The idea, brand judgement, final assets |
| Reporting | Looker Studio or a BI tool over one data layer | Narrative summaries | What the numbers mean for the business |
Email and lifecycle
Pick by fit: Klaviyo for e-commerce, HubSpot when sales and marketing share a CRM, Mailchimp or Brevo for simpler programmes. The AI features are good at subject-line variants and send-time optimisation; the flows, segmentation and consent handling still need a person who understands the business. Deliverability basics — authentication, list hygiene, CASL and GDPR consent — matter more than any feature; see our email and lifecycle service.
Social and creative
One scheduler for publishing and inbox, Figma for design systems, Canva for fast templated assets, and a video editor for short-form. AI here is a genuine accelerator for variations, captions, resizing and rough cuts. It is not a source of ideas your audience has not seen, and it does not know your brand well enough to sign off. Our creative and media team uses it as a first draft, never as the final one.
Tools do not make a marketing programme. A tracking plan, a calendar and an owner for each channel do.
Two rules that keep the stack honest
First, every account is in your name — ad accounts, pixels, analytics properties, email lists, social profiles — with your agency as a user, not an owner. Second, review the stack each quarter against the jobs list. Anything without a job gets cancelled, and the money goes into media or content, where it compounds. If you want the audit run on your current tools, that is the first week of any performance marketing engagement with us.
FAQ
Questions on this topic.
You need the job done: a fixed set of buyer prompts run monthly across the main assistants, with the cited sources logged. A dedicated tool or a suite add-on does that; a careful spreadsheet does it too at small scale.
Below enterprise spend, rarely. The platforms’ own automation with tight guardrails, a shared creative library and a budget pacer covers most programmes. Put the fee into media or creative.
By fit: Klaviyo for e-commerce, HubSpot when sales and marketing share a CRM, Mailchimp or Brevo for simpler programmes. Deliverability and consent handling matter more than features; get those right on whichever you pick.
You, always. Ad accounts, pixels, analytics properties, lists and social profiles sit in your organisation’s name with the agency added as a user. That is how OlDevs works and it is how you should insist any agency works.
