BigCommerce Development, in short

OlDevs is a full-stack technology studio in Vancouver, British Columbia that designs, builds and maintains BigCommerce storefronts for North American merchants. Our work covers Stencil theme development, the catalogue and multi storefront model, and headless builds that pair the BigCommerce Catalog and GraphQL Storefront APIs with a Next.js front end. We also handle B2B Edition capabilities such as company accounts and price lists, payments, tax and shipping setup, ERP and marketplace integrations, and migrations from Shopify, Adobe Commerce or a legacy custom cart. Every engagement starts with a scoped quote, and clients own all code, designs, accounts and IP.

What we do on BigCommerce

01

Stencil theme development

We build and extend Stencil themes with Handlebars templates, stencil-cli local development and versioned front end assets, then wire Page Builder regions and custom widgets so your marketing team can edit layouts without a developer ticket.

Stencil · Page Builder · Handlebars

02

Catalogue and multi storefront

Product options, modifiers, variants, custom fields, price lists and customer groups are modelled once and published across channels. Multi storefront lets you run separate brands, currencies, themes and catalogues from a single BigCommerce control panel.

03

Headless with Next.js

For teams that want full control of the front end we build a React and Next.js storefront on the GraphQL Storefront API, with cart and checkout handled by BigCommerce. Catalyst, the BigCommerce Next.js starter, is a sensible base, current at the time of writing.

Headless · Next.js · GraphQL

04

B2B Edition and wholesale

Company accounts, buyer roles, quotes, shopping lists, invoice payment and customer specific price lists let wholesale buyers self serve. We configure B2B Edition, extend the buyer portal and connect approval rules to the way your sales team already works.

B2B Edition · Price lists · Quotes

05

Payments, tax and shipping

We configure gateways, wallets and fraud rules for Canadian and United States sellers, set up automated tax or manual tax tables for GST, HST, PST, QST and state sales tax, and connect real time carrier rates with pickup in store where it fits.

Payments · Tax · Shipping

06

ERP, PIM and marketplaces

Orders, inventory, customers and pricing move between BigCommerce and your ERP or PIM through webhooks, the REST management APIs and middleware. Feed driven listings extend the same catalogue to marketplaces and shopping channels.

Process

Our process

  1. Discovery

We review your catalogue, order volume, integrations and the reasons the current store falls short, then agree what success looks like in plain language.

  2. Architecture and quote

You get a written plan: Stencil or headless, channel structure, integration map, migration approach and a scoped quote. No numbers before we understand the work.

  3. Build

Weekly demos on a staging storefront. Catalogue, theme, integrations and content are built in parallel with a shared backlog you can see at any time.

  4. Migrate and launch

Data moves in staged passes, redirects are mapped URL by URL, and we run a rehearsal before the real cutover so launch day is dull on purpose.

  5. Support and iterate

Post launch we monitor errors, checkout completion and page performance, then work through a prioritised backlog of improvements at your pace.

How we work

How a BigCommerce build runs with us

01

Model the catalogue first

Options, modifiers, variants, SKUs and price lists are decided before any template work, because the catalogue model drives search, filtering, feeds and every downstream integration.

02

Choose Stencil or headless honestly

Stencil is faster to launch and easier for a marketing team to own. Headless earns its keep when you need bespoke interaction, shared components or content from another system. We recommend the one your team can maintain.

03

Build in the open

Work lands in a Git repository you own, with a staging storefront and a preview link. You see a working demo every week rather than a long silence followed by a reveal.

04

Design for accessibility

Templates, filters, forms and checkout are built to WCAG 2.2 AA, tested with a keyboard and a screen reader, not just checked with an automated scanner.

05

Instrument before launch

Analytics, consent, server side events where they help, and clean product and order data. If a number cannot be traced back to a real event, it does not go on the dashboard.

06

Hand over cleanly

You keep the store, the repository, the apps and the API accounts. Documentation covers the theme, the integrations and the runbook for common changes.

Who it's for

BigCommerce Development for organisations that have to get it right.

Corporations

Multi brand and multi region sellers that need channel separation, ERP integration, procurement friendly checkout and a governance trail for every change.

Associations and government

Member pricing, restricted catalogues, purchase orders, bilingual EN and FR storefronts and WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility that stands up to a formal audit.

Franchises

One catalogue, many storefronts. Head office controls pricing, brand and product data while locations get their own channel, inventory view and pickup options.

Entrepreneurs and startups

A clean Stencil build that launches quickly, keeps operating costs predictable and leaves room to go headless later without rebuilding the back end.

FAQ

BigCommerce Development — questions we hear first.

BigCommerce suits merchants with complex catalogues, B2B pricing rules or several storefronts under one account, because much of that is native rather than app dependent. Shopify often wins on app ecosystem and speed to launch. A fully custom build only makes sense when your commerce logic is genuinely unusual and you are ready to own the whole stack.

Multi storefront lets one BigCommerce account run several storefronts as separate channels, each with its own theme, domain, currency, catalogue selection and price lists, while inventory, orders and customers stay in one place. It fits brand families, regional sites, franchise locations and a retail plus wholesale split without running two disconnected stores.

Only when the front end is doing something a Stencil theme cannot. Headless gives you full control of rendering, routing and component reuse across web and app, and BigCommerce supplies the GraphQL Storefront API plus a Next.js starter, Catalyst, current at the time of writing. It also adds hosting, build and maintenance work your team has to carry.

Yes. We migrate catalogues, customers, historical orders, content and URLs from Shopify, Adobe Commerce, WooCommerce and custom carts. The work is staged: a structure pass, a data pass, a redirect map checked URL by URL, then a rehearsal cutover. Customer passwords usually cannot transfer, so we plan a reset flow that does not lose accounts.

We set up tax by zone or automated tax so GST, HST, PST and QST apply correctly by province, and we test edge cases such as exempt products and out of province shipping. For payments we configure the gateways and wallets your bank and customers actually use, with fraud rules and refund flows tested before launch. Your accountant reviews the setup before go live.

B2B Edition brings company accounts with multiple buyers and roles, customer specific price lists, quote requests, shopping lists, invoice and purchase order style payment, and a buyer portal for order history and reordering. It removes most of the custom development wholesale sellers used to need, and we extend it where your approval or credit rules differ.

You do. The BigCommerce account, the domain, the theme repository, the app connections, the API credentials and the design files are yours from day one, registered in your name. We work inside your accounts rather than ours, document everything at handover, and you can move the work to another team whenever you choose.
