Shopify Development, in short

OlDevs is a full-stack technology studio in Vancouver, British Columbia that builds and maintains Shopify and Shopify Plus stores. The work covers Online Store 2.0 theme development in Liquid, custom apps and admin extensions, headless storefronts with Hydrogen or a Next.js front end, product feeds, subscriptions, B2B and multi market selling. How far the checkout can be customised depends on your plan: checkout extensibility and checkout UI extensions belong to Shopify Plus, current at the time of writing, while other plans work within what the platform and its apps allow. What we build on Shopify

01

Online Store 2.0 theme development

We build themes as sections, blocks and app blocks so your merchandising team can rebuild pages without a developer. Templates are JSON, settings are named in plain language, and metafields and metaobjects carry the content that the product record cannot.

Liquid · Sections · Metaobjects

02

Custom apps and app extensions

Embedded admin apps built with App Bridge and Polaris, plus theme app extensions, admin blocks and checkout UI extensions where your plan allows them. We handle OAuth, webhooks, mandatory privacy endpoints, billing and the app review process.

Admin API · App Bridge · Extensions

03

Checkout, discounts and Functions

Checkout extensibility replaced checkout.liquid for Plus merchants, so we build checkout and thank you page extensions instead of editing a template. Shopify Functions carry discount, delivery and payment customisation logic that used to need scripts.

04

Headless and Hydrogen storefronts

When a store needs a front end the theme layer cannot produce, we build with Hydrogen on Oxygen or a Next.js app on the Storefront API. We are honest about the trade: you gain control and give up parts of the theme editor, so the reason has to be concrete.

Hydrogen · Next.js · Storefront API

05

Product data, feeds and integrations

Product data modelling with metafields and metaobjects, bulk imports, and feeds to Google Merchant Center, Meta and marketplaces. We connect ERP, PIM, 3PL and accounting systems through the Admin API with retries and reconciliation, not one way fire and forget.

Feeds · ERP · Bulk imports

06

Migrations and performance

Moving from WooCommerce, Magento or a legacy build: products, customers, orders, content and redirects, planned so rankings and subscriptions survive. Then Core Web Vitals work on the theme, third party scripts and the app bloat slowing your checkout.

Process

How a Shopify engagement runs

  1. Discovery

We review the current store, catalogue size, app stack, traffic and the jobs your team does by hand every week.

  2. Scope and plan

A written scope naming what is native, what is an app, what is custom and what waits for phase two. Then a quote.

  3. Build in weekly slices

Theme, app or storefront work lands in reviewable slices, each with a demo and a short written note.

  4. Test and launch

Cross browser and device testing, accessibility checks, redirect maps, tax and shipping verification, then a launch window agreed in advance.

  5. Support and iterate

After launch we watch conversion, page speed and error logs, then work a prioritised backlog on a rhythm that suits you.

How we work

How we work on Shopify

01

Platform fit before code

We check what Shopify already does natively, what an existing app solves, and what genuinely needs custom work. Buying an app is often the right answer, and we will say so.

02

One accountable team

The developers who scope your store build it and stay with it. There is no handoff to a second team once the contract is signed.

03

A working demo every week

You see the store on a development theme or a preview link each week, so decisions get made against real screens instead of slides.

04

Accessibility built in

Themes are built to WCAG 2.2 AA: keyboard reachable menus, visible focus, real form labels and colour contrast that holds up against your brand palette.

05

Nothing untested on the live store

Development stores, theme preview links and version controlled branches keep experiments off the live storefront until you approve them.

06

You own everything

Theme code, designs, app listings, store and analytics accounts are yours from day one. We can hand over and step back at any point.

Who it's for

Shopify Development for organisations that have to get it right.

Corporations

Multi market stores, B2B catalogues with company accounts and price lists, ERP integration and procurement rules a stock theme cannot express.

Associations and government

Member pricing, restricted catalogues, bilingual EN and FR storefronts, and WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility treated as a requirement rather than a bonus.

Franchises

One brand across many locations: a shared theme with location level content, dealer locators, regional pricing and reporting each franchisee can trust.

Entrepreneurs and startups

A first real store on a theme your own team can run, with custom work limited to the two or three things your product genuinely needs.

FAQ

Shopify Development — questions we hear first.

Only if you need what Plus adds. Checkout extensibility, checkout branding controls, more staff accounts, extra sales channels and higher API limits sit with Plus, current at the time of writing. Plenty of stores run well on a standard plan with a well built theme and a short list of apps. We will tell you which side of that line your requirements fall on before you upgrade.

Yes, within what Shopify allows. Checkout extensibility replaced checkout.liquid, so customisation happens through checkout UI extensions, branding settings and Shopify Functions rather than editing a template file. That set of tools belongs to Shopify Plus. On other plans we work with the checkout as it ships and put the custom experience in the cart, the product page and post purchase.

Sometimes, and less often than the pitch decks suggest. Hydrogen on Oxygen, or a Next.js front end on the Storefront API, makes sense when you need a storefront the theme layer cannot produce or you are pulling content from another system. The cost is real: you give up parts of the theme editor and take on hosting and a build pipeline. We recommend it only when the reason is specific.

Yes. We map products, variants, customers, orders, content and metafields, then plan the redirects so existing search rankings and paid landing pages keep working. Subscriptions, gift cards and loyalty balances need their own plan, because they live in apps rather than the core catalogue. The migration runs on a development store first, and we cut over only once you have signed off.

Shopify calculates GST, HST, PST and US sales tax, and Shopify Tax offers registration based rates in supported regions. We configure tax settings, shipping zones, payment methods and duties for cross border orders, then verify real test checkouts against what your finance team expects. We are developers, not tax advisers: your accountant sets the rules and we implement them.

Subscriptions run on the Shopify subscription APIs, usually through an established app that we configure and extend rather than rebuild from nothing. B2B on Shopify Plus gives you company accounts, price lists, payment terms and catalogues per buyer, and we extend it where your rules are unusual. If the requirements are simpler, a wholesale channel or a second store can be cheaper to run.

Request a quote and tell us the store URL, roughly how large the catalogue is, and the two or three things that hurt most today. We reply within one business day, usually with questions, then book a call in your time zone. Scope and price come after we understand the work, in writing, with what is included and what is not both stated plainly.
